Solar Fences

A fence that pays for itself.

Bifacial solar panels standing upright on screw piles, making power from both faces. No roof needed, no snow to shovel off, and the fence line you were going to build anyway. Designed and installed across Northern Ontario for homes, farms and businesses.

When the roof isn't the right place

Lots of land, a roof that's shaded, old or the wrong way round

Plenty of places up here have more yard than roof. The roof faces the wrong way, it's due for shingles, it's shaded by the bush, or you just don't want holes in it. A solar fence puts the panels on the land instead: a straight run along a property line, a field edge or the back of the lot, standing upright like any other fence.

Rural homes and hobby farms with room to spare
Stores and small businesses with open land behind the building
Apartment and commercial properties along a parking lot or lot line
Roofs that are shaded, steep, north-facing or due for replacement

How a solar fence works

Two faces, standing straight up

Bifacial panels. They make power from the front and the back, so a fence facing east and west catches the morning sun on one side and the afternoon sun on the other.
Snow slides off. A vertical panel doesn't hold snow the way a roof does, and fresh snow on the ground reflects extra light onto the panels in winter.
Raised off the ground. We set the bottom row high enough that the snowbank along the fence line doesn't bury it.
Modelled on your bearing. Before you buy, we model the fence on your actual run and local weather data, so you see the production number for your yard, not a brochure number.

What we build

Built into the ground, not just sitting on it

Helical screw piles instead of concrete. They go in where concrete is a headache, including wet and low ground, and the depth is set by test piles on your site.
Steel posts and CSA-approved rail, with the panels mounted two per section in landscape.
Panel-level rapid shutdown and a lockable outdoor disconnect, so the fence can be made safe in seconds.
Underground cable trenched from the fence to the house or building.
A real fence if you want one. Chain-link infill and gates can be added so it keeps the dog in, too.
Permitted and inspected. Electrical Safety Authority permit and inspection, and the connection paperwork with your local hydro company.

Add a battery and use it at 4 pm

The fence makes it, the battery holds it, the evening uses it

Pair the fence with a hybrid inverter and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries. On Ontario's Ultra-Low Overnight plan, the battery can fill up overnight at the cheapest rate, carry the house or business through the expensive 4 to 9 pm weekday window, and keep the critical circuits running when the grid goes down. We program the system for the rate plan that actually saves you the most, and show you the options before you pick. See home battery backup and ULO vs Time-of-Use.

Straight answers

Does a fence make as much power as a roof?

Panel for panel, a well-pitched south roof usually makes a bit more over a full year. The fence makes it up by using land you already have, shedding snow, and spreading production into the morning and late afternoon. We model your exact fence before you buy, so you know the number for your site.

Which way should the fence run?

Usually north-south, so the faces point east and west. But a fence along your property line can still work running another way. We model the bearing you have and tell you what it costs you, if anything.

Does Ontario's home solar rebate cover a solar fence?

No. The Home Renovation Savings rebate is for rooftop solar on the home or a permanent building on the same meter, so ground mounts and fences don't qualify. Businesses have other tools; see our business incentives page.

Can it be net metered?

Yes. A grid-connected fence can be set up for net metering with your local hydro company, or for load displacement. We'll show you which pays better.

Got the land? Let's look at it.

Call or text with where the fence would go and roughly what you pay for hydro. We'll give you a straight answer on what it makes, what it costs and how long it takes to pay for itself. No pressure, no sales script. 249-878-5651 · info@honeybeesolar.ca
