Off-Grid Cottages & Camps

No line to the camp? No problem.

Solar, lithium batteries and a generator that starts itself, built for cottages, hunt camps and year-round places past the end of the hydro line in Northern Ontario. Sized from how you actually use the place, so you're not hauling more gas than you need to.

Most camps outgrow their first system

A few panels, a few batteries, then the freezer and the well pump show up

A lot of camps start small: a couple of panels, some lead-acid batteries and a generator for when the sun runs out. Then the family adds a chest freezer, a pressure pump, a second fridge, Starlink, maybe a heater fan, and the system that was fine for weekends now has the generator running half the day. We look at what you run today and what you want to run, and build the system around that.

What we build

Panels, batteries, inverter and generator working as one system

Solar array on the roof, a shop, a pole mount or a ground mount, sized to your loads and your season.
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries from Quebec-based Volthium, 5.12 kWh per 51.2 V module. Add modules as the camp grows.
Hybrid inverters from Sol-Ark and LuxPower that run the camp, charge the batteries and control the generator. Bigger places can run several inverters in parallel.
Generator auto-start. When the batteries get low, the inverter starts the generator, charges up and shuts it off again. No 2 a.m. trip to the shed.

Battery and inverter specs are the manufacturers' and apply to the specific models installed.

Built for a Northern Ontario winter

Short days, deep cold and a long drive if something goes wrong

Sized for December, not July. We plan for the short days and snow-covered panels, and size the battery and generator to carry you through them.
Batteries kept where they are happy. Lithium batteries should not be charged frozen, so we plan a warm or insulated spot for them.
A backup for the backup. On bigger sites we can wire in a second generator and an automatic transfer switch, so the camp keeps power even if an inverter faults.
Done to code. Permitted and inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority.

See the camp from your phone

Battery level, solar and generator, wherever you are

With an internet connection at the camp (Starlink works), our HiveGuard automation lets you check the batteries, solar and generator from your phone, and lets us spot a problem before you drive five hours to find it. It can text you if the generator is called to start and doesn't.

Straight answers

There's no hydro bill. How do you size it?

We go through what you run and when: the fridge, the freezer, the pump, lights, heat, the tools in the shop. Your generator hours and fuel use tell us a lot too. Then we size the solar, batteries and generator to that list, so you know what it will and won't carry before you buy.

Can you upgrade the system I already have?

Often, yes. Many camps keep the panels and replace the batteries and inverter, or add to them. We look at what's there first and tell you what's worth keeping.

Will I still need a generator?

For most camps used in winter, yes, but it runs far less. The inverter starts it only when the batteries need it, then shuts it off.

Is there a rebate for off-grid solar in Ontario?

Not under Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program: it only covers homes connected to the Ontario grid. If your cottage is on the grid, see the solar and battery rebate.

How far do you travel?

We're based in Skead, near Sudbury, and work across Northern Ontario, including camps well off the highway. Call or text and tell us where the camp is.

Tell us about your camp

Call or text with what you run and where the camp is. We'll give you a straight answer on what it takes, what it costs and how much less you'll run the generator. No pressure, no sales script. 249-878-5651 · info@honeybeesolar.ca
